The Real Jerk :: Jamaican

Insert annoying Jamaican Pun here
When I visited a friend in Barbados, one of my favourite treats were the late night street-eats. They put Toronto hot dogs to shame. Fully loaded burgers, bbq'ed & jerk chicken, the thickest fish steaks ever...it's not a mystery why McDonalds never survived in Bim.
Anyways, that is where I fell in love with Jerk chicken and I've been craving it ever since. Thought I'd start here:
 The Real Jerk
Verdict:  Eh. Despite rave recommendations, I was underwhelmed. Okay for the price though.
Meal: Dinner
Price: $7-$13 + tax & tip

Salad Creations :: PATH

Still trying to make friends with salad!

Finding quick, cheap, and healthy food can be quite the challenge. Figuring out the PATH can be an even bigger one.
Salad Creations
Verdict: Quick, tasty, & healthy in the PATH. A bit pricey, but one of the better options.
Meal: Lunch
Price:
$7.49 + $2.50 for "protein"

Okonomi House :: Oko-more-miyaki

Okonomiyaki!

A few friends and I got together for a soccer-okonomiyaki blitz. I'm not sure what motivated us more - the soccer or the Japanese pancake, but I'm tempted to guess the latter.

Okonomi House
Verdict:  Tasty, saucy, prefer Koyoi's but not bad at all!
Meal: Dinner
Price: $10 + tax & tip
Location: 23 Charles St W Toronto, ON

Le Gourmand :: Chocolate Cookie Crusade #7

Le Gourmand is finally back...Just in time for Cookie Wednesdays!

When Le Gourmand re-opened, I was eager to take CompaƱero de Galletas for one of their cookies. We popped in and the selection of baked goods was even better than I remembered! Mini lava cakes, apple crumble, little chocolate cakes, cookies galore...oh my!

We hopped over to the cookies, pressed our greedy little faces against the glass pane and made our picks.

Le Gourmand
Verdict:  In the lead! My all-time favourite
Meal: Cookie Run (Chocolate Cookie Crusade Series)

Price: $2 + tax & tip

Pumpkin Red Hot Chili Chocolate Cookies :: 5AM Baking

As usual, I was baking at 5AM...

A recent trip to Ed's Real Scoop inspired me to try my hand at Thanksgiving cookies. The combination of Pumpkin and Red Hot Chili Chocolate was great! What I didn't expect was an endless series of cookie batches that turned a curiousity into a downright obsession to re-create this flavour. Over 100 cookies were baked. Over 20 were eaten by yours truly. The things I do for cookies.

Warning: This post is uber-long. With lots of pictures. I've shrunk almost all of them for your bandwidth's sake, but as usual, simply click them to see the regular size.

Cafe La Gaffe :: Baldwin Village

So you may have noticed that I've hit almost all of the spots on Baldwin. There are some that I will not return to, so they'll never be reviewed or recommended (Bocca, Margarita [never again...worst on Baldwin], Kuni Sushi Ya, just to name a few)
Wanting a last minute venue for a friend's birthday lunch, we hopped down to Baldwin. Perhaps the fact that they were able to accommodate a group of 13 on last minute's notice should've been a sign that this wasn't' a hot spot but hey, sometimes it's about the company and laughter...not the food. Right?

Cafe La Gaffe
Verdict:  Massive portions, but massively boring
Meal: Lunch...and leftovers for dinner
Price: ~$15 + tax & tip

Location: 24 Baldwin St., Toronto

Pistacia Vera :: Foodie Gifts from Ohio

Macarons!
Ohio? The Paris of the Midwest? - M

Wonderful friends brought me a tasty treat from Ohio - Macarons! Before this, I had actually never tried them which most people find surprising due to my notorious sweet tooth. Kind of like how I never had a grilled cheese sammy until this year. Apparently, I have a lot of really common om-noms to catch up on.

Pistacia Vera
Verdict: Macaron cherry popped
Meal: Dessert, delivered with love :-)

Price: Awesome friends

Walima Cafe :: Moroccan Cuisine

Sweet Moroccan

Just east of Danforth's Greektown, the street is riddled  with a variety of late night pubs, cafes, restaurants. One late night, we decided to try Moroccan and after debating between Walima and Marrakech, we settled on the former. We thought it'd be a fun way to celebrate a friend's birthday and two friends' survival of their first portaging experience.

This was my first try of Moroccan cuisine, aside from an awful  Summerlicious dinner at MoRoCo Chocolat (which really doesn't count, in my opinion). So...I perhaps I don't really know what Moroccan food is supposed to be like. The very poor lighting didn't lead to the best pictures, but here we go anyways!

Walima Cafe
Verdict:  Skip. Not horrible, but overall disappointing.
Meal: Dinner
Price: ~$25
Location: 1450 Danforth Avenue

Kensington Natural Bakery & 3 Thanksgivings

Thanksgiving!

I had a pretty great Thanksgiving. Err, correction: I had three great Thanksgivings! For the last one, I picked up a pie from Kensington Natural Bakery - a shop on Bloor St that focuses on preservative-free baked goods and meals.
Update:: Also tried their cookies and take out

Kensington Natural Bakery
Verdict: Okay Pumpkin Pie - wish it was more spicy, but still good & a healthier alternative
Meal: Dessert
Price: $8.50/pie
