Frank @ AGO :: Dessert

Outside, Dining area, & Bar

Summer evening desserts are a great way to spend time with friends. Why have a cup of coffee when you can have a cup of espresso creme?

I heard positive reviews regarding the AGO Cafe's cute desserts, but as they usually close at 5pm it's not really fit for late evening sugar cravings. Noticing that Frank was open much later, I decided to pop in for a sugary date. Ho-hum.

Summer Berry Pudding
Raspberries, strawberries, red currants, and vanilla whipped cream

While tasty, I think that this would've been better topped on top of a cake rather than being served as a messy slab of pudding. It was more mushy than pudding-y.

Coffee and Donut
Chocolate espresso pot de creme with dulce de leche whipped cream and cinnamon sugared mini donut
Cute presentation - chilled pot de creme had a nice chocolate-espresso flavour, but I wish it was a bit stronger or denser or had bits of chocolate in it.

The donut was quite disappointing. Despite being made in-house, both the twist and the donut were stale and lacked flavour. I would have been happier with a Timbit from Tim Hortons - for 16 cents! In fact, I snarfed 3 chocolate Timbits the next day and they were much more satisfying.

So. That made me think: Where can I get great donuts in Toronto?

Aside from Hoof Cafe's Beignets, I've  never been a fan of donuts - whether fresh from Krispy Kreme, stolen picked-up from a platter at a student event, or bought from Tim Hortons I've never been wow'ed. How un-Canadian of me! There must be delicious donuts out there that don't need to be made with bone marrow to be great...right? With the Crepe City Chase going strong, why not also indulge in a Downtown Donut Delve? Going from the triple-C to the triple-D, I'll eventually make my way back to a tripe-B. B standing for bypass.

So begins the search for a simple, yummy donut in the downtown core. No frills, no need to sit down at a restaurant. Maybe I am not a donut girl (quite possible - I do love my cookies) but I think it's worth testing a few places out before writing them off for good. Suggestions for donut-runs are welcome!
